REJECTED Reception
My painting: There Is Sunshine In Every Room Of My House, is hanging at Burl Gallery (previously AZ Gallery) I will be at the reception, hope to see you there!
The fine arts department of the Minnesota State Fair presents an annual exhibition that is the result of a juried competition. Participation is open to all living residents of Minnesota, and each may submit one work for consideration.
But! Only the works selected by the jurors are displayed in the
Fine Arts Center during the exhibition.
In 2023, a total of 2,650 pieces were submitted and only 332 were accepted.
Like the Salon des Refusés of 1863 in Paris, the Argyle Zebra Gallery invites the ‘rejects’ of the Minnesota State Fair fine arts exhibition to display their rejected submission and put the authority of judgement back in the hands of their community.
Gallery Hours: Saturdays & Sundays: 10am-4pm

Figire Drawing / Life Drawing Co-op
Figure Drawing
The goal of figure drawing (also known as life drawing) is to capture the essence of the human form – its muscles, texture, postures, and movement. In a life drawing co-op we practice seeing and drawing forms, proportions, perspective, shading, and other essential art fundamentals. Drawing a figure from life is a unique challenge, and the camaraderie that comes from working with other artists in the same space is wonderful!
What to expect:

We work with a professional model, who will create poses for us to draw from. This class is self- led, but timing and discussion are run by a facilitator. We begin with a series of quick poses (1-2 minutes). This is ideal to practice loosening up, and for creating gesture drawings. Poses will slowly get longer, until we get to a 20 minute pose (or two) at the end of class. After class feel free to stay while people show off their drawings, and have a light discussion about process, materials, challenges, and successes. This is a low/no pressure opportunity to learn from peers and yourself!
Please bring materials to draw/create with. Some people choose to use charcoal, graphite, watercolor, colored pencils, etc. to practice with, but bring what feels best to you!
Date and Time: Monday, September 9th 6-8pm. With an optional 20 minute show and tell / discussion afterwords
Cost: $10 paid at the door
Age- 18+ (Because this class works with a nude model, participants should be 18+)
Instructor: This class is self-led; however, it is facilitated by Surelle Strike. If you have questions, please email Surelle@wyomingcreativearts.org

Visage: A Contemporary Portrait Show- Gamut Gallery, Minneapolis, MN
MINNEAPOLIS, MN // May 10th - June 22, 2024
Visage: A Contemporary Portrait Show - An exhibition featuring 17 artists exploring the contemporary lens of society by questioning what defines a modern portrait in a digital age. Curated by Francesca Bernardi.
Featuring: Amit Michaels, CL Martin, Brant Kingman, Hend Al-Mansour, Jade Patrick, Kao Lee Thao, Kelly Helsinger, Kristi Abbott, Leslie Barlow, Mat Ollig, Nell Pierce, Pam Eader, Patrizia Vignola, Stephanie Friest, Surelle Strike, Russ White and Van Holmgren.
Amidst the prevalence of selfies and manipulated images, identity is often blurred. In our exhibit, Visage seventeen Minnesotan/Wisconsin artists have used varied artistic styles through collage, photography, oil, and acrylic paintings to create stunning portraits of figures from their imagination, their peers, and women who have impacted society.
Visage prompts viewers to reflect on the complexities of identity and perception in today’s digital age, delving into contemporary portraiture by questioning what defines a modern portrait in the 21st century. Each portrait acts as a mirror, connecting the viewer to the subject's image and a deeper reflection of what it means to be human and how we experience emotion while aiming to cultivate curiosity and foster connections between viewer and artwork.
“Every artist comes from a unique background, whether an emerging artist in Minneapolis or an established artist that has shown worldwide. As I curated Visage I dove deeply into the intricacies of the modern-day human experience, wanting to encourage visitors to engage with diverse perspectives and appreciate the richness of human expression.” - Francesca Bernardi, Curator

ARTIST STATEMENT
Our lives are made of stories. Many famous male fairy tale writers would pay the local women to tell them the stories they knew. Women would use story telling as a way to pass the time while working on crafts like knitting or needlepoint, housework, and childrearing. Women would use these tales to escape into fantasy, but often story telling was used as a way to teach morals, and to share life or death advice. Fairy tales would be filled with love, and disappointment , warnings about types of men that a women may encounter, quiet recipes for ending an unwanted pregnancy. They were filled with the realities of both tragedy, and hope. My paintings depict women who are in the midst of navigating their stories, or re-writing them entirely. They are re-imagined as more than incapable children, or damsels in distress. The fairy-tale of the female experience, is represented by multifaceted characters, and symbolism. Symbolic plants, animals, and needlework are small details I enjoy weaving into my stories and images. My work is modern day storytelling, with female characters who are deep and complex. They are not to be overlooked in order to favor the prince or the plot. I work in an array of mediums: watercolor, gouache, and acrylic. I have also been exploring printmaking, with linoleum blocks. This medium has brought me back to many classical fairy tale illustrations, and in a way allows me to simplify my work, to much more illustrative and gestural elements. Acrylic painting has been my preferred medium in the last few years, as it dries quickly and allows me to use washes of color to build a painting. Finding ways to combine both my love of printmaking and my love of painting is my hope for the next year.
